Anchor Brewing Company

The Anchor Brewing Company was initially founded in 1896 by German immigrants. Despite challenges at the beginning of the 20th century (earthquake, fire), and then the Prohibition, the brewery managed to survive, It was one of the last remaining breweries to serve authentic steam beers. After the war, things didn't get much easier for the brewery. It was closed in 1959, then reopened, and then closed again in 1965. It was then bought by Fritz Maytag and since then the Anchor Brewing Company has been systematically evolving. It changed its profile to become one of the first craft microbreweries in the USA. Today, it is still recognised as a craft brewery, most famous for its Anchor Steam Beer.
